Santa Maria della Grazia

Santa Maria della Grazia, and Santa Maria della Cavana or simply la Grazia is an island in the lagoon of Venice. It has an area of 3.81 hectares and is located 345 meters south east of the Giudecca. 610 meters further south is the island of San Clemente, and 1100 meters east of the island of San Servolo.

History

With permission from the October 12, 1264, the island headquarters of an inn for pilgrims to the Holy Land was. Marco Bollani, abbot of San Giorgio Maggiore, commissioned a Lorenzo, there to set up a corresponding monastery, which later became the Congregation of Hermits di San Girolamo, founded in 1405 talked of Fiesole; they existed until 1668th

Later Capuchins took over the monastery, until the abolition of the Order by Napoleon in 1806. Island petered out because there was rubble buried a long time. 1849 exploded there a scale powder magazine. Until the 20th century there were ill provided with highly contagious diseases under quarantine.

In early 2010 the island was sold.
