Santa Ponsa

Santa Ponsa ( in German and English often the Castilian name: Santa Ponsa ) is a town in the southwest of the Balearic island of Mallorca. It belongs to the municipality of Calvià. The distance to the island's capital, Palma de Mallorca is about 20 kilometers. Santa Ponsa has 11,418 inhabitants ( 2011).

Location description

Santa Ponsa is grouped around an elongated, surrounded by steep cliffs bay. The smaller compared to the neighboring Peguera sandy beach, which is traversed by a canal, located at the head of the bay. Attached is a small green area. Separated by a moderately busy quayside restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops drag along the beach zone. Voluminous, five -and six- storey hotel in a uniform features dominate the north shore and the central region.

Santa Ponsa gained prominence in summer 2010 by the TV accompanied the opening of the eponymous cafes by Daniela Katzenberger. In the 2011 season also opened near the Café Katzenberger Bistro by Jürgen Drews named " The King of Majorca".

A few minutes walk from the center there is a picturesquely situated marina. Along the northern and southern shores extend the villa districts, wealthy foreigners and Spaniards. Here many German have settled. There was a German school, which was however closed in 2011. In the catchment area of Santa Ponsa is currently the English school " Baleares International College " in the neighboring Magalluf. There is a small German cultural center. Behind the hotel front the north coast there is the much smaller tourist center " The Square ", which is heavily frequented by British and Irish. In the surrounding area there are three golf courses.

History

Near the village, the Puig de Sa Morisca, was from ancient times to the Muslim period a settlement of Talaiot culture that has been unearthed and has been partially restored. In the 13th century Santa Ponsa was the site of a significant historic event for Mallorca. On September 10, 1229 landed Jaume I of Aragon with a force near the marina today, ushering in the recapture of the island from the Muslim Moors. To commemorate a column was erected at this location. Today the battles at landing time will be added on the first weekend in September at the beach.
