Santo Tomé, Corrientes

History

The origins of the village date back to the 17th century. After the founding of Yapeyú and La Cruz by Jesuit missionaries Santo Tomé was founded in 1632 by the Jesuit Luis Manuel Bertot Ernot and with the help of two friendly Guarani chiefs, who had converted to Christianity. The decline began with the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1768. In 1817, ravaged Civil War and the invasion of the Portuguese on the Brazilian border the site.
