São Jorge is a comune ( Freguesia ) on the north coast of the Portuguese island of Madeira, in a circle ( concelho ) by Santana. The municipality has an area of 19.3 km ² and 1493 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011).

History

As of 1419 the population of the island of Madeira began. 1515 independent municipality of São Jorge was created.

In 1999, UNESCO laurel forest of Madeira on the world heritage list. The municipality of São Jorge is located about halfway into this nature reserve.

Management

São Jorge is the name of a municipality ( Freguesia ). The neighboring municipalities are in the West Arco de São Jorge Ilha and the east and Santana.
