Sarafina! is a South African feature film from the year 1992.
Action
1976: Students fight back during the uprising in Soweto against the introduction of Afrikaans as the language of instruction. Sarafina is ashamed that her mother works as a maid in a white household. They inspired their peers to rebel against it, after their teacher, Mary Masombuka was arrested.

Shooting
Whoopie Goldberg convinced Disney thereof, to make this film, because it would then also be ready the role of Dolores Van Cartier in Sister Act 2: Back again - to embody in the Habit. The film was shot in Soweto and Johannesburg in South Africa. Darrell Rodt resulted from a screenplay by Mbongeni Ngema and William Nicholson Director.

Sarafina! was shown out of competition at the 1992 International Film Festival of Cannes.
Publication
The film was released on 18 September 1992 in the English-speaking world and on 8 April 1993, Germany. On 16 June 2006 there was the 30-year anniversary of the uprising in Soweto to publication. This " remastered director's cut " version contains zusätzich a scene between Sarafina and her mother, who was cut from the original film and contains the song Thank you Mama.
Background
Sarafina! is the screen adaptation of the musical, which premiered in June 1987 at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg and was played in New York, among others, on Broadway.
