Features

The crown peel fungus forms first half under ground a hollow sphere and then breaks at the apex of crown-shaped and forms a deep cup-shaped fruiting bodies, which is then usually spread out flat in old age. The fruiting body is 3 to 10 inches tall with a purple, violet -brown to colorless hymenium on the inside. The outside is white. The consistency is tough and brittle. The spores are smooth, hyaline, with 2 drops of oil and 13.5 to 15 × 7 to 8 microns in size. The asci are cylindrical and are 280 to 330 × 10 to 12 microns in size. The Ascusspitze stained in Lugol purple. The paraphyses are filiform and forked part.

Occurrence

The crown peel fungus occurs under pines and spruces, but also in the deciduous forest on calcareous soils in coniferous forest. According to Gerhardt it is not rare, but in many places missing.

Toxicity

The crown peel fungus is particularly raw highly toxic. From some people it is consumed after boiling and discard the cooking water without damage.
