Sarıkamış

Sarıkamış (Kurdish Qamuşan Armenian Սարիղամիշ / Sarighamish ) is a town and a district of Kars Province in north-eastern Turkey. Sarıkamış located in the southwest of the province and borders the provinces of Erzurum and Ağrı.

The district has 50,950 inhabitants Sarıkamış, the city of 19,691 (as of 2011 ).

History

Sarıkamış was occupied during the Russian - Ottoman War (1877-1878) by the Russian armed forces and remained until the peace treaty of Brest- Litovsk in 1918 under Russian rule. During the First World War, the Battle of Sarıkamış took place near the town from December 22 1914 to January 15, 1915.
