Sărmașu

Sarmasu [ sərmaʃu ] (Hungarian Nagysármás ) is a town in Mureş county in Romania.

Location

Sarmasu is located approximately in the center of Transylvania, at Bach Pârâul de Campie in the Transylvanian Heath ( Câmpia Transilvaniei ). The county town Targu Mures is located about 40 km south-east.

History

Archaeological finds evidence of a settlement in the region since the Neolithic period and the Bronze Age. The town was first mentioned in 1329 under the name Willa Sarma; then the place of the Hungarian king was handed over a nobleman named Istvan Pogány. In a document from 1348 Sarmasu was donated by King Ludwig I of another noble family; In this context, a wooden church is mentioned. First, the place was inhabited mainly by Hungarians; later dominated Romanians. 1895 bought by the Hungarian state a good and settled there Hungary from the west of the country. Around 1910 began the production of natural gas. After the First World War Sarmasu came to Romania. Even after the Second Vienna Award of the place remained in Romania, but was close to the Hungarian border. In September 1944 126 Jews were executed from the site by Hungarian troops. From 1947 to 1968 Sarmasu was a local administrative center; 2003, the city received the status of a city.

Population

In the 1850 census had a population of 2,274 on the territory of today's 2,030 Romanians, 125 Hungarians, 116 Roma Romania and two German. Of these, 745 lived in Sarmasu in the strict sense, the others in the now incorporated villages. Due to the mentioned settlement of foreign Hungary 1910 they accounted for about two-thirds of the village population ( 1,326 of 2,101 ); However, in the surrounding villages, the Romanians were in the majority.

By 1966 a significant population increase took place ( 8867 ); then, the population has declined. In 2002, in the town of 7,493 people registered, including 5,086 Romanians, 1,820 Hungarians and 577 Roma. 3,877 lived in the city proper, 3,616 eingemeindeten in the seven villages.

Traffic

Sarmasu is located on the railway line from Sieu - Magherus after Luduş, which is currently (2009) operated by private providers RegioTrans. In both directions, at about five commuter trains daily. There are regular bus services to Târgu Mureş.
