Satu Hassi

Satu Hassi Maijastiina ( born June 3, 1951 in Helsinki) is a Finnish politician of the Green League and currently a member of the European Parliament.

Biography

Satu Hassi studied electrical engineering at the Technical University of Helsinki. In 1975 she moved to Tampere and was there at the Technical University in 1979 and her master's degree in 1985, the licentiate. From 1979 to 1981 she worked as an engineer at the engine company Tampella Oy Ab Tamrock. Then she was until 1985 a lecturer at the University of Tampere. From 1985, she worked as a freelance writer.

In 1985, she began to get involved in politics and became a member of the City Council of Tampere, a position she held until 2000. In 1991 she became a member of the Finnish Parliament. From 1997 to 2001 she was chairman of their party. In addition, it was several times chairman of the Green League in the Finnish Parliament.

On 15 April 1999 Satu Hassi was environment minister under the then Prime Minister Paavo Lipponen. However, they left the office back on 31 May 2002, to protest against the government's decision to build a fifth nuclear reactor in Finland. In 2004, she ended her membership in the Finnish Parliament, as they had been elected to the European Parliament.

Since 2003, Satu Hassi is also a board member of the World Watch Institute. She has published several books, mostly novels and poetry, but also an eight -volume textbook of physics. She is married and has two grown daughters.

Activities as an MEP

In the period 2009 to 2014 is Hassi member of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety, the Delegation to the EU-Mexico Joint Parliamentary Committee and the Delegation for relations with India. As a deputy she's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and the Delegation for relations with the People's Republic of China.
