Savannah Churchill

Savannah Churchill ( born August 21, 1920 in Colfax (Louisiana ) as Savannah Valentine, † April 19, 1974 in Brooklyn, New York City ) was an American rhythm and blues and jazz singer.

Life and work

Savannah Churchill comes from a Creole family from Louisiana and grew up in Brooklyn, where she began performing in 1941 in order to feed her family after her husband was killed in a traffic accident. First shots, as their song " Fat Meat Is Good Meat " was released in 1942 on Joe Davis ' label Beacon Records. The following year she had the opportunity, with the Benny Carter einzuspielen some pieces for Capitol Orchestra, as well as their first hit "Hurry, Hurry ."

In 1945, she signed a contract with the label Manor Records; her song " Daddy Daddy " reached # 3 on the rhythm & blues charts. In 1947, Churchill her only number - one hit on; "I Want To Be Loved (But Only By You) " staying for eight weeks at the top of the R & B charts remained. The 78s was released under the band name of the vocal group The Sentimental fans who soon renamed to The Four Tunes. Even more songs Churchills with The Four Tunes like " Time Out for Tears " (# 10 R & B, # 24 pop charts ) and "I Want to Cry ", both published in 1948, were successful in the charts.

Savannah Churchill joined successfully applied in various films, such as in Miracle in Harlem (1948) and Souls of Sin (1949 ). With their title ( It's No ) Sin she succeeded in 1951 a top 10 hit. On tour, they also led to Hawaii (1954 ), it was accompanied by the vocal group The Striders. In 1949 she recorded for the label shelf, RCA Victor and Decca, 1956, she was one of the first artists of the new label Argo.

A tragic accident ended her career in 1956, when a drunken man at a club appearance of a gallery collapsed on them and they hurt so badly that she it never fully recovered. Although in 1960 recorded some songs, her health deteriorated rapidly; she died in 1974 at the age of 53 years of pneumonia.
