Savoy Prealps

Savoy Alps (Le Néron, Chartreuse, seen from Grenoble )

The Savoy Alps or French Limestone Alps are a mountain range in the Western Alps. They extend from the Swiss Valais over the two départements of Savoie and Haute -Savoie to the Isere department. They border on the east by the Graian, to the south by the Dauphiné Alps and on the southwest by the Dauphiné Alps ( Vercors ).

According to international agreement ( SOIUSA ) be divided the Savoy Alps in six mountain ranges:

  • Aiguilles Rouges - chain ( Aiguilles Rouges )
  • Giffre ( Buet - Ruan - Dents du Midi; Fis - Platé - Colonney; Dents Blanches - Avoudrues - Nant Golon )
  • Chablais ( Hauff local Grange; Bise - Oche; Roc d' Enfer Brasses )
  • Bornes ( Aravis; Bargy - Lachat - Tournette )
  • Bauges ( Arcalod - Trélod - Semnoz; Grand Colombier- Margerie Revard )
  • Chartreuse ( Mont Granier -Dent de Crolles Grand Som; Chamechaude Charmant Som ).

In other sources, the Aiguilles Rouges - chain is missing.

The Savoy Alps form a part of Kalkzone, which further continues to the southwest in the Dauphiné Alps and Provencal Alps, to the northeast in the Swiss Alps and in the northern Eastern Alps. This zone is separated by valleys (eg the Isère ) quite sharply by the crystalline central massifs ( Mercantour, Pelvoux, Belle Donne, Grandes Rousses, Mont Blanc, Aar - and Gotthard massif ).
