Saw-tooth roof

A shed roof ( Germanized also shed roof ) or Sägezahndach is an umbrella shape, which is constructed as especially in buildings with large surface areas such as factory halls. Several small wound or saddle roof-like roof structures are lined up one behind the other.

A building with a shed roof is also called Shedhalle, Shedgebäude or Shedbau. The word origin is likely to be in an English term for dandruff shed or shed.

Construction

The advantage of shed roofs is that the base area of the building can be minimized and an illumination by natural light from the north is made possible glare-free without the formation of shadows. The individual roof structures are referred to with a shed roof as a rider. The tab consists of a sloped roof and a steeper or vertical window surface that allows light. This has the advantage that a building fewer supports for the roof structure required to ensure the design, which is reflected in the cost of construction.

The steep or vertical side of the ridge turret is running translucent, thus the uniform and optimized exposure large and very large covered surfaces can be achieved. In buildings where glare plays a minor role, sheds can also be oriented in other directions than the north. If doing a two-sided exposure via laterally additionally arranged skylights in shed roofs, the illuminance increases in middle of the room and is optimized on the walls.

In the postwar period, the lighting has been further improved by the use of fluorescent tubes.

In conventional shed roofs under the influence of weather and gravity can be used to cover and seal due to the relatively large tilt angle, especially when using roofing felt, to leak after a few years. The problem occurs especially in the peripheral areas of the seal. There meet different materials, ventilation and outflows each other. Possible solutions to the problem are the 1991 patent by reducing the weathering profile plates which are secured to metal profiles or the seal with liquid plastics.

Thermal insulation

The rider faces that are facing the south side, are suitable for energy optimization. Previously thermal insulation measures have been neglected, so that results primarily in industrial a pent-up demand.
