Sayyid Ajjal Shams al-Din Omar

Sayyid Adschall Shams ad-Din Umar al -Bukhari (Arabic: سيد أجل شمس الدين عمر البخاري, DMG Saiyid Aǧall Samsu d- Dīn ʿ Umar al - Bukhari; Chinese赛 典 赤·赡 思丁; pinyin: Sàidiǎnchì Zhānsīdīng; * 1210 in Bukhara, † 1279 ) was a prominent official of the Yuan Dynasty and the first governor of China in Yunnan Province. On him and his followers also is the introduction of Islam back in this province.

Rise

He was originally from Bukhara and will therefore also receive with the suffix al -Bukhari. The title Sayyid (al- ) Adschall suggests a descent from the Prophet's family. As a boy he witnessed the conquest by the Mongols and later served the Khans in different offices. Beginning of the 50s he was one example to the staff of Mahmud Jalatwatsch († 1254 ), who was then governor of North China and one of the most important officials of the empire. Beginning of the 60s he had in the central government several top positions simultaneously or in rapid succession, also held. He was responsible for agriculture and political affairs, the issue of paper money, the public works, management of Shaanxi and Sichuan, including the local military operations. The Persian historian Rashid ed Din describes its administrative affairs as absolutely perfectly (about 1303).

Governor Yünnans

In 1273 he became governor of considering its strategic location and gold deposits of the Yuan- yard significant Yunnan Province, and remained so until his death. The province was affiliated with his appointment to China, and in fact still is today.

As governor Yünnans he tried to establish a good relationship with the local population groups to stability and integration, which the locals should be convinced of the benefits of belonging to China. Sayyid Adschall had functionally rebuild, organize census, postal services and tax collection administration Yünnans. He ordered the construction of the first two mosques in this province, but also the construction of Confucian, Buddhist, Daoist temples including Confucian schools, while irrigation works to Kunming. And he also encouraged trade and the acquisition of cultural ideas from China (eg, marriage, burial ). Heritage

Although Sayyid Adschall only indirectly operational Islamisierungspolitik, marked his appearance and his staff but also the successful introduction of Islam in this region ( see also Hui Chinese ). His sons Nasr ed Din Husain and followed him in the administration of Yunnan Province after and continued his work. In the following years his family was not so lucky, but the famous navigator Zheng He was his great-great- great-grandson and came from Yunnan.
