SCARB1

HDL receptor ( SR- BI) (also: scavenger receptor B1 ) is a protein in the cell membrane of vertebrate animals, which binds to HDL particles and lipids. Human SR-BI is expressed in many tissue types, especially in the liver and this is the condition that, in blood HDL is floating free in the liver of its lipids, and these can then be disposed of ( reverse cholesterol transport). Also Cholesterol is needed by the adrenal glands for steroidogenesis; SR -BI is also the docking point for HDL. SR-BI further binds to phosphatidylserine, so it is involved in the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells.

SR -BI plays an essential role in the infection with the hepatitis C virus and Plasmodium parasites.

For the expression and localization of the SR-BI protein PDZK1 scaffold is necessary. The decreased expression of SR -BI in mice high-fat diet is probably regulated by PDZK1. In the adrenal glands, the expression of SR-BI is regulated by signal transduction via PREB.
