The Scaritinae are a subfamily of beetles (Carabidae ), but is probably not monophyletic. In Europe, 226 species and sub- species occur.

Features

The small to very large beetles have always been a strong constriction between pro-and mesothorax. Your body is significantly flattened, as in the case of the genus Scarites or nearly cylindrical in shape, such as in the genus Dyschirius.

The morphology of the larvae is very different depending on the tribe and subtribes, what a Polyphylie suggests. Of several subtribes and tribes Salcediini but the larvae are unknown.

Way of life

The beetles dig in the soil and in sandy ground.

Systematics and distribution

The subfamily is distributed worldwide, but the focus of dissemination lies in the southern hemisphere. The Tribe Promecognathini with five genera in southern Africa and north-west of North America spread the tribe Salcediini is distributed with three genera worldwide.
