Scepter Records

Scepter Records, often short scepter, is an American record label. It was founded in 1959 by Florence Greenberg in New York City.

History

Greenberg founded Scepter Records with a starting capital of $ 4,000, which saved them from the sale of their record label Tiara Records on Decca Records. Previously Tiara Records had released the first minor hit the soul band The Shirelles. After the Shirelles with Decca Records If this could not happen again, they announced Decca Records. Greenberg, who was still manager of the Shirelles wanted to play the songs of the Shirelles market themselves and to this end founded Scepter Records.

In 1962, the subsidiary wall Records was founded. In the 1960s, mostly Soul title, inter alia, of The Isley Brothers, Dionne Warwick and BJ Thomas on scepter, but also some blues and jazz recordings such as Big Bill Broonzy and Thelonious Monk appeared.

Scepter Records evolved into a company with 75 employees, several gospel and classical departments, their own record labels and recording studios. 1976 Scepter Records was sold to the verge of insolvency at a significant loss to Springboard International.
