The 24 km ² Schaalsee is a lake on the border between Schleswig -Holstein and Mecklenburg- Vorpommern in Germany.

Description

The lake is located centrally on the long leg of the triangle Hamburg -Lübeck -Schwerin. In a north-south direction it is 13.8 km long and 71.5 meters is the deepest freshwater lake in northern Germany. The lake level is 35 m above sea level. NHN.

The Schaalsee is the Phulsee, the Pipersee, the Salem Lake and finally connected via the built 1923-1925 Schaalsee canal with Big Küchensee, a section of the Ratzeburger at the end of one of the few hydropower plants in Schleswig -Holstein, the slope at the lower lake level of the Ratzeburger exploits. It is operated by E.ON Hanse.

During the German division of the inner German border ran through the Schaalsee.

The northeastern part of the lake is called Bernstorfer lake and Niendorf lake.

The city situated on the southern shore Zarrentin am Schaalsee is the largest town on the lake. There the Schaale drained as a natural outflow Schaalsee. The Schaale flows further south and empties into the brews that flows into the Elbe after a few kilometers.

In Schaalsee there are several islands, of which the island Kampenwerder is the largest. Furthermore, in the lake are the Stintenburg island and a few other uninhabited islands such as the Rethwiese.
