Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park

The nature park founded in 1961 Lauenburg Lakes is located in the Duchy of Lauenburg in the southeast of Schleswig- Holstein, on the border of Mecklenburg- Vorpommern in the embossed by the Weichseleiszeit young moraine landscape of Schleswig- Holstein hill country.

Location and meaning

The nature park is over 470 km ² is the third largest national park in Schleswig- Holstein with vast forest areas. The Lauenburg Lakes Nature Park, there are 40 in number, directly adjoins the Mecklenburg Schaalsee and forms together a large protected area along the former inner- German border.

The largest lakes in the Natural Park of Lake Ratzeburg and the Schaalsee, which are connected by the beginning at Salem Schaalsee channel.

In the Nature Park are further the county town of Ratzeburg and Mölln with the Hellbachtal. Due to the nature park passes - in some places, as in Fredeburg, even as a medieval route - the Old Salt Road from Lüneburg to Lübeck. The nature park is bounded to the west between Berke Thin and Büchenberg approximately through the Elbe- Lübeck Canal. Through the landscape of Naturparkweg that connects the five national parks in Schleswig -Holstein for hikers runs.

Due to the nature park the watershed between the North and Baltic Sea runs.
