Schiefling am Wörthersee (Slovene: Škofiče ) is a location in the vicinity of Klagenfurt bilingual municipality with 2625 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia.

Geography

Geographical location

The territory of Schiefling am Wörthersee extends along the mountain range Sattnitz and is located south of Lake Wörth. The main village is located around 15 km from Klagenfurt and not right on the Wörthersee.

Around two kilometers east of the town Schiefling is the Trattnigteich. It is situated on the forested mountain ridge between the Wörthersee and the four-lake valley in the district Goritschach. On the north side of the 5.3 -acre water body is still the same inn Trattnig. Can be caught pike, carp, catfish and tench. Here also the Wörthersee Trail leads past with its blue-white- blue marks. On the western shore there is a beach.

Neighboring communities

History

Finds at the municipality belonging Kathreinkogel suggest a settlement by Mesolithic hunter-gatherers (from the 7th millennium BC) and Neolithic farmers ( from the 3rd millennium BC) close. Even a settlement of the Late Bronze Age Hallstatt culture was confirmed by archaeological finds.

Between the 2nd and the 5th century AD a Roman fort was built on the summit plateau of Kathrein Kogel, which was extended by an early Christian church hall in the late 4th century. Below the castle there is a cemetery with 53 graves.

Since the settlement of the area by the Carantanians - Slavs in the 6th century and the establishment of Carantanian statehood in the 7th century, the territory of the Sattnitz and Schiefling / Škofile is closely connected with the Slovenian cultural history.

The district Albers village was called " Albenesdorf " in 1150, Slanted Ling himself as " Schüflich " in a deed of the Carinthian Duke Ulrich III. in 1256 ( " septem mansus sitos in villa Schüflich " - seven farms were transferred to the monastery Reun in Graz ) was first mentioned in records.

From a part of the former District Court Leonstein formed in 1850 from the four cadastral Schiefling, Maria Wörth, Kathrein and Techelweg the community Schiefling whose name was changed in 1900 in Schiefling am See. 1903 Maria Wörth split off as an independent municipality. 2006, the community was entitled to use the designation " market town " granted. On 1 June 2010, the name was changed to " Schiefling am Wörthersee ".

Originally dominated by the agriculture community is today strongly influenced by the summer tourism.

Population

According to the 2001 census, the municipality Schiefling am See 2267 inhabitants, of which 93.1 % have Austrian, 3.6% German and 1.2% Croatian citizenship. 5.8% of the population belong to the Slovene-speaking minority.

For the Roman Catholic Church to 84.2 % of the community population profess the Protestant Church 3.6%, no religious persuasion are 8.4%.

The Catholic parish is held in two languages ​​, German and Slovenian.

The Slovenian Cultural Association Edinost Škofiče

The Slovenian Cultural Association Edinost Škofiče was founded in 1905 initially as an educational and glee club " Slavček " (Nightingale ), but soon renamed Edinost. The establishment and appointment of the Association Edinost Škofiče go back to the Slovenian culture movement of that time, were established for the arrangements under a hand in the effort to affirmation of the Slovenian identity numerous Slovene educational and cultural associations, as well as many to this day active Slovenian cooperatives and savings and loan associations. Coat of arms

The golden spike in the sign of the emblem of Schiefling am Wörthersee is the distinctive Kathreinkogel, the 772 m high " mountain" of the community. The crosier is alluding to the origin of the place name: This is the result of a corruption of the Slovenian word Skofiče what about "Village of the Bishop " means, so probably that is meant of Freising, who was resident in Maria Wörth since the 9th century. The Broken Richtrad is the attribute of St. Catherine of Alexandria, patroness of St. Catherine's Chapel on the Kathreinkogel.

Coat of arms and flag of the municipality Schiefling were presented at the Wörthersee, on 18 June 1991. The flag is green-red with integrated crest. Personalities

  • The composer Alban Berg spent some time in the community. He earned in 1932 in the village of Auen on the Wörthersee a holiday home ( "Forest house" ), where he worked on his violin concerto and the opera Lulu. In his honor was erected in the park in front of the town hall is a bust.
