Features

Butterfly

The moths reach a wingspan from 15 to 22 millimeters. The ground color of the forewing is reddish brown. In midfield are fused together yellow-white spots. The apex is pointed. Ring and kidney blemish or out, but taking nearly nothing from the underground. The wavy line is usually pink or created light brown. The hind wings are black and crossed by a broad, pure white transverse band that extends to the inner edge. The females have a long abdomen with protruding ovipositor. The segment incisions on the abdomen are yellowish.

Caterpillar, and chrysalis

Adults caterpillars have a brown- gray color, the back four yellow lines, wide white side stripes and black spiracles.

The brown-yellow doll has a sleek shape and has long thorns on the cremaster.

Similar Species

Schinia cardui mainly differs by the narrower, creamy white transverse band on the hind wings, which does not reach the inner edge.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

Schinia cognata comes in southeastern Europe in warmer areas patchy ago. Isolated populations also live in the South Alps. Eastwards reaches the circulation area as far as Turkey and South Urals. The species inhabits mainly steppe and warm, dry slopes.

Way of life

The moths are predominantly diurnal. Their main flight period covers the months of June and July. The live in August and September caterpillars feed on Korbblütlerarten (Asteraceae ), in particular of Big Knorpellattich ( Chondrilla juncea ).
