Schönbiel Hut

The Schönbielhütte is an alpine refuge in the Swiss Alps. It stands on a promontory opposite the Matterhorn, near Zermatt at an altitude of 2,694 m. Owner of the cottage is the Monte Rosa section in Sion of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC ).

The refuge Schönbiel is the last stop on the way " Haute Route " from Chamonix to Zermatt. The Patrouille des Glaciers leads past the post Schönbiel, this is located on the glacier below the hut.

History of the hut

The refuge Stockje (36 ), considered as a forerunner of today's Schönbielhütte. It was built in 1875 1890 but destroyed by an avalanche. For this reason, the refuge in 1909 was slightly higher reconstructed. Edward Whymper, the first conqueror of the Matterhorn, was present at the inauguration of the hut. 1955, the cottage was modernized and expanded.

Rise

The climb to the hut starts at the top station of the Schwarzsee track ( 2,583 m) on the same lake. From there, in about 2h 30 hours to the hut or direct to 4h of Zermatt.
