Schottenring (Vienna U-Bahn)

The station Scots ring is an underground interchange station of the U2 and U4 between 1 ( Inner City ) and the 2nd Viennese district Leopoldstadt. It is named after the Scots ring, reminiscent of the founded in the Middle Ages by Irish Benedictine monks Scots Monastery. The plant

The station parallel to and below the Danube Canal lying and has a mid - and two side platforms. History

The station was first opened on 6 August 1901 as part of the Danube channel light rail line by Otto Wagner. 1918, it was closed and re-opened on October 20, 1925 in the context of electrified rail. Although the original recording building opposite the also designed by Otto Wagner barrage Emperor survived the heavy artillery fire along the Danube Canal during the Battle of Vienna in 1945, but was demolished in the 1970s as part of the rebuilding of the Danube Canal and Wiental to U4 and by a new replaced. This was mainly due to the lack of historic preservation. It justified this step with the necessary due to the link with the U2 reconstruction of the station from two - to four-track operation.

On April 3, 1978 ( after 2 days of operation pause) the rebuilt station was reopened for the U4. On August 30, 1980, the U2 reached the station Scots ring. 1981 an attempt was made by a line to include U2 / 4 a metro ring around the 1st district, but this was dropped again due to the thus caused chaos after 3 weeks of trial operation. Since 1980, the station was the terminus of the Scots ring U2. Between 2002 and 2008, a complete renovation, a track of U2 was demolished. During this time, provisionally called the Spanish solution was applied: The traits of U2 could be left on both sides. Here a completely new railway station on the U2 line was created under the Danube Canal, which was opened on 10 May 2008. The construction was carried out in a closed construction.

After opening of the new, deeper U2 station, the reconstruction works started in the former, at level with platforms of U2 and U4. The remaining track of U2 in the middle of the two U4 - island platforms was removed.
