Scipione Gentili

Scipione Gentili (also: Scipio Gentili; * 1563 in San Ginesio; † August 7, 1616 in Altdorf bei Nürnberg ) was an Italian jurist.

Life

Born as the son of the physician Matthaus Gentilis, he had to leave early in life his home because his father confessed to the Protestant faith. He went on to study law at the University of Tuebingen, the Wittenberg University and the University of Leiden. In Leiden Hugo Donellus was his teacher. After his release in 1587 he went to the University of Heidelberg, where he was taught by Hippolytus of Colli and Julius Pacius of Beriga.

After working as a lecturer there and had the prospect of a professorship of institutions, he became embroiled in an intrigue of Julius Pacius. He went to the University of Basel, where he promoted by Franz Hotomann, became a Doctor of Law on April 16, 1589. Following this, he undertook various journeys, he is drawn to the University of Altdorf, where he again met with Donellus and lectured to the institutions.

Sponsored by Donellus, he became professor of the institutions, then took over the chair of the Pandects and after Peter being Beck's departure from Altdorf, he became the first legal professor at the Nuremberg Academy. With this office he was consul of the Nuremberg Council, was repeatedly Rector of the University and remained in this position until his death.
