Design features

The Scorpène class was developed from the Agosta class. In the design but have also been developments in contemporary French nuclear submarines, such as The steel alloy of the hull used.

The modular design provides for three types of construction. In addition to the basic concept is a larger model, which is equipped with air-independent propulsion MESMA offered. Submarines with this drive are three to four times longer than the boats of the basic variant can operate under water without the use of the snorkel. As an inexpensive alternative to the basic version is offered as a third variant, a smaller and less powerful version.

So far, only the base version was built and delivered. India plans to build three MESMA boats.
