The Oberon - class is a class of British diesel-electric submarines. 13 boats were built for the Royal Navy, 14 other boats were to Canada (3 units, 1965-1968 ), Australia (6 units, 1967 to 1978 ), Brazil (3 units, 1973 to 1977 ) and Chile (2 units, 1976 ) exported.

History

The Oberon - class was designed in the late 1950s. She was a modified Porpoise -Class XXI and thus inspired the German type.

The Oberon are considered the best submarines of their time, they had the reputation of being surprisingly quiet. For this reason, the boats managed to still be in use in the 21st century. The best proof of the quality of the Oberon class might be the fact is that it was one of Australia's submarines, " sink " during an exercise to the American aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.

The British units were put into service 1960-1967. Mid-1980s have been converted to a new sonar system (Type 2051 ), nine of the boats, which was necessary because of the construction of the Upholder - class delayed. These nine units to be identified by a large "bubble " in which is concealed the great Sonodom. In 1982, HMS Onyx part in the Falklands War, where they, landed members of the Special Boat Services.

Today, all built units have been decommissioned, the last boats of the Royal Navy in 1993. Onyx is a museum ship in Birkenhead, Merseyside, HMS Ocelot is part of a museum in Chatham. The Australian HMAS Ovens serves as a museum ship in Fremantle, also is the HMS Otus as a museum ship in Sassnitz and can be visited. The Otus was not retrofitted with the Type 2051 sonar system and is thus externally in original condition.

The Canadian HMCS Onondaga ( S73) is in June 2009 as a museum ship in Rimouski, Quebec. The other three remaining Canadian submarines, Ojibwa, Okanagan and used as a training ship Olympus, lying at a pier in Dartmouth in the Halifax harbor. The Chilean " O'Brien " was placed out of service on 31 December 2001 and is now a museum ship in Valdivia, Chile.
