Seal Nunataks

The Robben Island (english Seal nunataks ) are an archipelago off the Nordenskjold Coast on the eastern edge of the Antarctic Peninsula in the Weddell Sea. The terminals are described as nunataks. However, unlike other nunataks they are no protruding from the ice or glaciers, mountains, but are actually marine islands. The formerly surrounding ice shelves ( Larsen -A) has disintegrated in 1995. A few kilometers south-east of the island group is located adjacent to Robertson Island.

The Robben islands were discovered and named in December 1893 by Carl Anton Larsen. Explored in October 1902, described Otto Nordenskjold as head of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition, the Robben Islands intense. The islands are of volcanic origin and between 200,000 ( Donald Gray island and island ) and 1.5 million years old (Lars island and Bruce island). Volcanic activity were observed but only to a limited extent on two of the islands by Larsen in 1893 and again in the early 1980s. The Murdochinsel is the highest of the Robben Island with 368 m. The Pedersen Island is the westernmost and at the same time next coast of the islands, only about 6 kilometers from the Antarctic mainland.

1961 Argentina built on the island Lars today only seasonal service Polar Station Base Antártica Matienzo.
