Séamus Pattison

Séamus Pattison ( born April 19, 1936 in Kilkenny, County Kilkenny) is an Irish politician of the Irish Labour Party and former Chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ).

Biography

Pattison was born in 1936 as the son of the politician James Pattison and his wife Ellen (nee Fogarty ). Originally functionary of the union ( Trade Union), he began his political career in 1961, when he was elected as a candidate of the Irish Labour Party for the first time for the Members of the lower house ( Dáil Éireann ). There he represented for 46 years until 2007, the interests of the constituency of Carlow - Kilkenny. From 1964 to 1997 he was a member of the city council of Kilkenny ( Kilkenny Corporation). During this time, Pattison held thrice the post of mayor of the city, namely 1967-1968, 1976-1977 and 1992 to 1993.

In 1981 he moved according to the European Parliament for Liam Kavanagh. In 1983 he left the European Parliament again to be Minister of State. Thus Pattison was in the run of Taoiseach Garret FitzGerald coalition government of Fine Gael and Labour Party 15 December 1983 until his resignation on January 20, 1987 Minister of State to the Minister for Social Welfare. Later he was from May 1993 to January 1995 and again from March 1995 to June 1997 Chairman of the Committee on Social Affairs.

After the general election of 1997, he became Chairman on 26 June 1997, succeeding his party colleague Seán Treacy ( Ceann Comhairle ) of the lower house. This office he held until 18 June 2002 and then traded under the previous general election, the President of Parliament with his former deputy, Rory O'Hanlon of the Fianna Fáil. The Office of the Deputy Chairman of the House ( Leas - Cheann Comhairle ) he practiced from then until 29 April 2007.

Pattison opted not to run again in the general election in May 2007 and retired from the Dáil from.
