History

Already in ancient Greece there were city halls ( bouleuterion ), where the council met. However, the bouleuterion was not also the place for the administration, which was housed in prytaneion.

In the Middle Ages the town halls developed (also called Playhouse ) - especially since the awarding of independent city- rights - the most momentous secular building of cities. Here met the City Council, which was composed of influential families or patricians. The guilds and guilds was the Town Hall - the seat of the Council - for a long time and in many places closed, so they built their own buildings. The claim to be the most privileged subject, was clear in its rich architectural design. A highly visible town hall tower often housed the only public clock of the city ( see also: Belfry ). In addition to the council chamber were often large halls for celebrations of the city to find the town hall. Since many town halls from the award of city and market privileges arose, were often large market halls on the ground floor.

In the 19th century, after the recovery of municipal autonomy, the construction project of the Town Hall became important again. Often turning toward the Gothic style of the first heyday of the town halls ( approximately at the Vienna City Hall, a building from the early days ). In the 20th century impressive town halls which were taken in Scandinavia, about Stockholm City Hall and the City Hall of Oslo.

The Town Hall building was built usually in the center of the cities and gradually expanded. In the course of municipal reform in the 1970s many town halls today's districts have been put to other uses in Germany.
