Sebastian Barry

Sebastian Barry ( born July 5, 1955 in Dublin) is an Irish playwright and novelist. He is the son of Francis Barry and Irish actress Joan O'Hara.

Barry wrote, among other things, the play The Steward of Christendom and the novel The Whereabouts of Eneas McNulty that focus on both the riots between Irish and British loyalist - Nichtloyalisten in Ireland in the early 20th century. His maternal grandfather, Thomas Dunne, is the main character of The Steward of Christendom.

Barry's best-known novel, A Long Long Way was shortlisted for the Booker Prize in 2005 and received the 2006 Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. The novel tells the story of a young recruits of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Willie Dunne, during the First World War. It clarifies the divided loyalty of the Irish to Ireland and England at the time of the Easter Rising in 1916. 2008 Barry came with his novel The Secret Scripture again shortlisted for the Booker Prize. However, an Irish author had in 2007 with Anne Enright received the Booker Prize.
