Sebastián Cordero

Sebastián Cordero (* May 23, 1972 in Quito, Ecuador) is an Ecuadorian director, screenwriter and producer. He is known for especially for the two films Rata, Ratones y Rato Nero and Crónicas. They were shown to a variety of known film festivals such as the Sundance Film Festival and the International Film Festival in Cannes.

Biography

Sebastián Cordero was born in 1972 in Quito, Ecuador. He first came to the cinema medium in contact when he saw the age of nine Raiders of the Lost Ark. At 18, he began studying at the University of Southern California. After graduating, he returned with the idea to Ecuador back in his home country where there is virtually no film industry was to make films.

His first film Rata, Ratones y rateros (1999 ) was first shown at the International Film Festival in Venice, then in Toronto, San Sebastian and in Buenos Aires.

In the Premios Ariel in Mexico, he was nominated Best Latin American film for a Silver Ariel in the category, on the Film Festival of Bogotá for a Círculo Precolombino de Oro (German Goldener pre-Columbian circle) on the Slamdance Film Festival for the Grand Jury Price and Spain for a Goya for Best Spanish-language foreign film. In Bogotá, he obtained an honorable mention and at the International Film Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, the prize for the best cut.

His second feature film Crónicas (2004) was nominated for a Silver Ariel in Mexico and at the Film Festival of Cartagena for the Golden India Catalina. At the Sundance Film Festival, he was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. He won there the NHK Award. He was also awarded in the categories of Best Film and Best Screenplay with the Mayahuel Award at the Festival Internacional de Cine en Guadalajara. Overall, both of his films have been nominated eight times at film festivals for prices, of which he won five.

Manhunt, the project of a film about the search for the murderer of Abraham Lincoln, starring Harrison Ford, was put on hold in 2007.
