Sechew Powell

Sechew Powell ( born June 6, 1979 in New York City ) is a retired American professional boxer.

Amateur career

Sechew Powell comes from Brooklyn, boxed as an amateur fight under the name " Dark Horse " and won 149 of 156 amateur fights. It was 1997 American Junior Welterweight Champion, 2000 National Golden Gloves champion in the light middleweight and 2001 U.S. champion in the light middleweight division.

In addition, he won the 1998 the American Boxing Classic tournament in Milwaukee, the bronze medal at the National Golden Gloves in 1999, the silver medal at the U.S. Championships in 2000, the gold medal at the U.S. Challenge in Lake Placid and the bronze medal at the U.S. Championships, 2002.

In 2000, he competed in the U.S. Olympic Qualification ( Olympic Trials ) in Florida, but was disqualified in the semifinals in the fight against Sergio Mora for unsportsmanlike conduct.

At the international level, he won in 1997, the second Anwar Chowdhry junior tournament in Baku and competed at the 2001 World Championships in Belfast. After victories against Dmitri Nowitski from Ukraine and Luke Wilaschek from Germany, he was defeated in the quarterfinals against Damián Austin from Cuba.

Professional career

He turned professional in 2002 and even won his first 20 fights in a row, including 12 early. He defeated among others, Jonathan Taylor ( 3-0), Sergio Meléndez (5-0 ) and George Armenta (12-3 ). On May 6, 2005, he won against the undefeated Cornelius Bundrage ( 21-0 ) by a double precipitation by TKO in the first round. On 25 August of the same year he defeated Santiago Samaniego also ( 36-9 ) ( world title challenger of WBA / WBO) by TKO in the third round. After point victories against Archak TerMeliksetian (15-1 ) and IBF world title challenger Robert Frazier ( 31-6 ), he won in June 2006 by TKO in the tenth round to eventual champion North Willie Lee ( 14-4 ).

In his 21 professional fight on 5 August 2006, he lost at Madison Square Garden on points against former IBF world champion Kassim Ouma ( 24-2 ). But he defeated in his next fight on February 17, 2007 Ishe Smith (18-1 ) by unanimous decision and could also Terrance Cauthen ( 32-3 ) and Kevin Finley ( 12-0 ) defeated prematurely. On 11 June 2008 he lost t.K.o. in the seventh round against Deandre Latimore (18-1 ), but won the rematch on points.

On 25 June 2011, he boxed again against Cornelius Bundrage ( 30-4 ), who had become World Champion of the IBF. Powell, who is now the challenger was listed as number 1 in the IBF world ranking but this time had to admit defeat on points. Also in the fight against Cory Spinks ( 38-6 ) 28 January 2012, he suffered a point defeat. His last fight he denied June 1, 2012 against Gabriel Rosado ( 19-5 ) and lost by TKO in the ninth round.
