History

The name " tesa " is a portmanteau, created in 1906 by Elsa Tesmer, who until her marriage in 1908 ( then behaves. Karlau ) as a clerk or the office manager at Beiersdorf worked. In a letter of 1960 she writes: " Do you know how the name tesa came? In the office then we had the mandate to form the name " Elsa Tesmer fulfilled this order and made a name from the syllables of their own (birth ) name:. Te - and - SA.

The company initially manufactured toothpaste tubes, the name of newly found was therefore used for developed at Beiersdorf patent tube of toothpaste Pebeco. The tubes business was very successful and this is why the brand name in 1926 assigned to a newly developed product. The company announced a new dip-coating composition for transferring skins of sausages the name, however, this product has had little success.

Developed in 1935, Beiersdorf AG a transparent adhesive film, which first came under the name " Beiersdorf's rubber tape " in the trade, scoring a few sales. Therefore, the Beiersdorf employees Hugo Kirchberg came up with the idea to give the product the name TESA. In a letter from 1936 Kirchberg speaks for the first time from the tesa adhesive film. In addition to this incident, the merchant had more marketing ideas. So he developed a tape dispenser, which serves the consumer as a processing aid for the tape. With advertising slogans that met the spirit of the times, he led product and name to success.

The introduction of tesa as an umbrella name for all tapes produced by Beiersdorf increased from 1941, the importance of the brand to a large extent. Today, there are about 6,500 different tesa products for industrial customers and consumers. Tesa SE as an independent company in 2001 (then as a public company tesa AG) spun off from Beiersdorf AG. The annual turnover in 2008 was EUR 860 million and was reached to 78% with special self-adhesive system solutions for the printing, paper, electronics and the automotive industry.

The parent plant Hamburg manufactures mainly products for the automotive and electrical industries. The scotch tape and other consumer products, produces the tesa plant Offenburg.

In Austria, the company took over from the former manufacturer of Cyrus the TIXO brand, a brand name in Austria as great a reputation as tesa has in Germany.

Tesa as data storage

A chance discovery

The two physicists Steffen Noehte and then- graduate student Matthias Gerspach discovered in March 1998 at the University of Mannheim just before a CeBIT presentation by chance that the tesa tape can also be used as data storage. A first promotion was told the two researchers by the former SAP board member Klaus Tschira in the European Media Laboratory ( EML). Tesa SE picked up on this basic research and started with the researchers initially a development cooperation. In December 2001, she founded the tesa scribos GmbH in Heidelberg, where the researcher to 25% involved 75% of tesa SE. There, the team was able to develop the invention in its own laboratory. First, we focused on a system for product tracking and for the protection against counterfeiting of branded products. The so-called tesa holospot system is on the market since 2003. So far, scotch tape is however not used as a mass data storage.

Anti-counterfeiting through miniature holograms

The core of the tesa Holospot technology is a small label from a special polymer material, on which a 1 mm ² is data field. Thereupon information such as images, logos or text in the amount of 1 KB can be saved. The information can be in the form of micro-printing or computer generated digital holograms, encrypted if desired, be stored tamper-proof on the holospot. The information can be, depending on the desired security level, read with a simple magnifying glass or by authorized persons with analog or digital reading devices. The new technology enables the individual identification of each individual product, and thus its authentication or traceability.

Generating X-rays

2008 reported by scientists at the University of California, Los Angeles, that during rolling of transparent adhesive tape in a vacuum X-rays are generated. X-rays are strong enough to expose conventional X-ray film. During ordinary use of the adhesive tape, however, is no danger of radiation from it, as necessary for the formation of static charge generated during the rolling is removed too quickly by the air in order to generate radiation.
