Semisopochnoi Island

Semisopochnoi Iceland ( " Unyax " or " Hawadax " in Aleut; German also: Rat Island) is an island belonging to the United States, the western Aleutians.

The 221.7 km ² large island is the easternmost of the Islands Council. It lies between North America and Asia on the southern edge of the Bering Sea just west of the 180th meridian.

The island was discovered by Vitus Bering in 1741 - as a part of the Pacific ring of fire - volcanic origin, it remained uninhabited until today and has for many seabirds ideal breeding conditions. The name comes from the Russian Semisopochnoi and means " seven hills ".

The most active volcano is Mount Cerberus with 774 m height. The Sugarloaf Peak in the south of the island is 855 m high. The highest point is 1221 m high Anvil Peak.
