Senate (Belize)

The Senate in the Central American Belize forms, together with the House of Representatives the Belizean National Assembly.

The Senate in Belize has twelve members of the Senate and a President of the Senate and can be compared with the House of Lords in the UK. Each member of the Senate is appointed by the Governor-General with the following rules for the application is:

  • Six members of the Senate are appointed by recommendation of the Prime Minister
  • Three members of the Senate are appointed by recommendation of opposition leader
  • A member of the Senate appointed by recommendation of the Church Council (Belize Council of Churches and Evangelical Association of Churches )
  • A member of the Senate appointed by recommendation of the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Association
  • A member of the Senate appointed by recommendation of the Committee of Union and civil society

The task of the Senate 's ratification of all treaties of the Belizean government, and the appointment of ambassadors, the President and judges of the Supreme Court, the judges of the Court of Appeals and others.
