Senate of Iran

The Senate (Persian کاخ مجلس سنا Kach -e Majlis -e Sena ) was valid until 1979 after the Iranian Constitution, the second chamber of the Iranian parliament. After the Islamic Revolution of Iran was given a new constitution with which the Senate was abolished.

Function

The Constitution of 1906 formulated the order of the Senate in Article 46 as a second chamber, which must approve all laws and resolutions of the first parliamentary chamber, the Majlis. Election law

The 30 senators are elected each half by an indirect election through electoral and appointed 30 by the Shah. The Senate thus consists of 60 senators. The legislature of the Senate is six years. After three years, half of the senators is ruled out by a lottery from the Senate and must therefore be redefined. Re-election is possible. Article 45 of the Iranian constitution states that the election of senators from among the well-informed, discerning, pious and respected personalities of the kingdom shall be elected. The circle of eligible persons was restricted to the high clergy, former army officers, scientists and scholars, higher state officials and large landowners and merchants with a minimum tax revenue equivalent to 25,000 euros (as of 1965). Senate building

The building of the Senate was Heydar Ghiaï designed. The construction was completed in 1955. After the dissolution of the Senate, the building is now used by the Guardian Council.
