Senegalese constitutional referendum, 2001

The constitutional referendum in Senegal in 2001 was conducted on January 7, 2001 at the instigation of a year earlier elected President Abdoulaye Wade. Goal was the introduction of a new constitution for the Senegal. It was the third referendum since the 1960 Senegal became independent and resulted in a more than 90 % majority in favor of the new constitution. This result opened the way for the parliamentary elections in Senegal in the same year.

The adoption of the Constitution of the Senate of Senegal, a facility that had been introduced in 1999, was abolished. The only Senate election in Senegal - which took place in 1999 - had been boycotted by the then opposition parties, including that of Wade, because they saw the Senate as superfluous.
