Șercaia

Sercaia (deprecated Serpeni or Sărcaia; Schirkanyen German, Hungarian Sárkány ) is a municipality in the district of Brasov in Transylvania, Romania.

The place is also known by the German names Schirkengen and Scharken.

Location

The village is situated in the district of Brasov, right on the European Route 68, about halfway between Fagaras ( Fagaras ) and the county capital Braşov (Kronstadt).

History

The formerly inhabited by the Saxons in Transylvania town was first mentioned in 1235 as Sarcam documented. Schirkanyen limited since the Middle Ages to four Romanian villages and a Hungarian village and thus was a German linguistic enclave. Today, most Romanians live in Sercaia.

Economy

Agriculture and food industry (especially pigs ) dominate the labor force in the village.
