Serebryanye Prudy

Serebrjanyje Prudy (Russian Серебряные Пруды, literally " Silver Ponds ") is an urban-type settlement in Russia in the extreme south of Moscow Oblast, near the border with Ryazan Oblast. The 9705 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) scoring village lies on Ossjotr, a right tributary of the Oka, located some 160 km from Moscow, and is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons within the oblast.

History

The first mention of the place Prudy south of Moscow are from the early 1570s - years. At this time the place was near the southern borders of Muscovy and therefore was often invaded by Tatars. For this reason, the village served for a time as a fortress, but this meaning lost until the 17th century again when the borders of Russia could be moved further south.
