Serge Nigg

Serge Nigg ( born June 6, 1924 in Paris, † 12 November 2008) was a French composer.

Serge Nigg studied from 1941 at the Paris Conservatoire with Olivier Messiaen harmony and counterpoint with Simone Plé - Caussade. In 1945, he met René Leibowitz, who introduced him to the twelve-tone technique. After a concert for piano and winds and one for piano and strings (both 1943) and the symphonic poem Timour were his Variations pour piano et instruments 10 of 1946, the first dodecaphonic strictly composed work of a French composer. It was premiered at the Festival International de Musique dodécaphonique that Leibowitz organized in 1947.

1956 Nigg was a member of the Music Committee of the French broadcasting. From 1967 to 1982 he was a member of the Music Department of the French Ministry of Culture, after which he took a class for instrumentation and orchestration at the Conservatoire and became president of the Société Nationale de Musique. He became a member and 1995 President of the Académie des beaux -arts in 1989.
