Sergei Svetlov

Sergei Alexandrovich Svetlov (Russian: Сергей Александрович Светлов; born January 17, 1961 in Penza, Russian SFSR ) is a former Russian ice hockey player and current coach. Most recently, he was head coach of Atlant Mytischtschi from the Kontinental Hockey League.

Career

Svetlov played during his career at HK Dynamo Moscow. In the NHL Entry Draft 1988, he was selected in the ninth round to 180th place by the New Jersey Devils. Due to the political situation in the former Soviet Union, he never played in the National Hockey League. Later, for the season 1990/91, he joined the German 2nd Bundesliga hockey EC Ratingen. In all, he scored 137 goals in 372 games in the Soviet league. He was appointed to the team of the Soviet national ice hockey team. On 3 September 1980 he was in a game against Finland for the first time for the Sbornaja on the ice. His international career was crowned with the gold medal at the Olympic Winter Games 1988. For the national team, he scored 57 goals in 154 internationals. On May 20, 1988 he played his last international match. In 1988, he was inducted into the "Russian Hockey Hall of Fame". 1996/97 he was the coach of the EV Landshut and from 1999 to 2004 in the ESV Kaufbeuren.

Before the season 2008/ 09 Svetlov took over the head coaching job of Crimmitschau Eispiraten from the 2nd Hockey League. Shortly before the season starts in early September he volunteered but due to a herniated disc unable to work and then came back from his office. A few days later it was announced that the injury was faked and he had perceived an offer as an assistant coach at HK Lada Togliatti in the Kontinental Hockey League. In February 2010 he was promoted to head coach in Togliatti. In September 2010, he took over the head coaching job at KHL Amur Khabarovsk participants and coached the club until April 2011.

In November 2012, he was introduced as the new head coach of Atlant Mytischtschi, having previously set the success neither Janne Karlsson, still under Alexander Smirnov. After a series of defeats at the start of the 2013/14 season Svetlov was released together with Alexander Nesterov and assistant coach Alexei Kudaschow was promoted to head coach.
