Sergei Winogradsky

Sergei Nikolaevich Winogradski (Russian: Сергей Николаевич Виноградский, scientific transliteration Sergei Nikolaevich Vinogradskij, English and transliterated Sergei Winogradsky; * 1.jul / September 13 1856greg in Kiev, Russian Empire, .. † February 24, 1953 in Brie -Comte- Robert in Paris) was a Russian microbiologist and plant physiologist.

He studied from 1881 Science at the University of St. Petersburg; he graduated in 1884. From 1885 he worked at the University of Strasbourg in the botanist Anton de Bary. Winogradsky was known for his work on sulfur bacteria.

Winogradsky was from 1891 professor in Saint Petersburg and in 1922 at the Institut Pasteur in Paris.

Winogradsky worked on chemolithotrophy, for which he coined in 1922 the term Anorgoxidation. He put the concept of geochemical first active bacteria, which are capable of oxidizing inorganic compounds, and to obtain from these reactions energy and carbon.

The Winogradsky column is named after him.
