Sesuvium

Sesuvium portulacastrum

Sesuvium is a plant genus of the family of Mesembryanthemum plants ( Aizoaceae ). The origin of the botanical name of the genus is unclear.

Description

The species of the genus Sesuvium are annual to perennial, prostrate to ascending growing herbaceous or shrubby plants having a short taproot. The opposite, stalked leaves are shaped more or less the same. Your leaf blade is almost cylindrical to elliptical or obovate. The epidermis contains bladder cells of different size.

The flower stems of solitary 5 - zipfeligen flowers can be of missing to long. The pink to purple and rarely white flowers have two bracts. There are 5 to many free or at a low ring deformed at the base of stamens present.

The 2 - to 5 - fächrigen fruits contain numerous more or less round, shiny, black seeds.

Systematics and distribution

The genus Sesuvium distributed worldwide in the tropics.

The first scientific description was published in 1759 by Carolus Linnaeus in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae. The type species is Sesuvium portulacastrum. After Heidrun Hartmann ( b. 1942 ), the genus Sesuvium include the following types:
