Shalimar Gardens, Lahore

The Shalimar Gardens, and Shalamar Gardens, Lahore in Pakistan were created from about 1642 Emperor Shah Jahan in the form of a Persian garden on the type of four-divided Chahar Bāgh. You and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Description

Lahore in Pakistan was once the ceremonial site of the Mogul Empire. In the 16th century prompted the Mughal Emperor Akbar the renovation and restoration of the fort, a powerful military system of red sandstone. In the following decades, this fortress was covered with white marble. The architectural highlight sat Shah Jahan in the 17th century, under whose rule the mirror palace was built.

The Shalimargärten built after the model of the Shalimar Gardens of Srinagar in Kashmir. In extensive terraces of marble in addition to numerous ponds with fountains, surrounded by fragrant flowers and singing birds from around the world, the lovers should find happiness. The word " Shalimar " comes from the Persian language and means as much as the purest of human pleasures.

Since 1981, include the Shalimar Gardens World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 1999, two of the three cisterns that irrigate the gardens, destroyed during the construction of a road. Also, pollution, slow erosion and lack of funds for a restoration of the fortress and the gardens are threatened. Therefore, they were placed on the request of the Pakistani government by UNESCO in 2000 to the Red List of World Heritage in Danger. 2012, they were removed from the list.

Trivia

Because of the romantic mood in the gardens of a perfume company Guerlain Shalimar was called. Guerlain claims that the word come from Sanskrit and means " house of pleasure ", but that is wrong.
