Shamkir FK

The FK Şəmkir is an Azerbaijani football club from Şəmkir, a town of the same name Rajon.

History

The FK Şəmkir played since the 1995/96 season in the Premyer Liqasi, was in the first two years avoid relegation narrowly and succeeded in the 1997/98 season third in the standings.

The following year we qualified fifth for the championship finals and there was even runner-up. In the same year stood in front of about 8,000 fans at the Baku Cup final, but Neftchi Baku had to concede defeat after a goalless draw at the end of the game with 4:5 on penalties.

2000 achieved his great success as one of eleven -point lead for the first time won the national championship. The following year was successful title defense since the point Neftchi Baku same had the worse goal difference.

Although it was in 2002 at the end of the season at the top, the championship will however, not recognized by the AFFA, the Azerbaijani Association, as several clubs against Fuad Musayev, the association's president, revolted and the championship regardless of the association for its own account at the end played. The UEFA has denied the recognition and no club allowed to participate in the international competitions. Nevertheless FK Şəmkir stood in the cup final, which was however stopped when in the 84th minute a penalty against the club was given and then the team had left the place. Final opponents Neftchi Baku was declared then the Cup Winners' Cup. The following year, no championship took place because of the quarrels between the association and the clubs.

When the league in the summer of 2003 again took up the game mode, the club was again among the participating teams and reached the end of the season, the runner-up. On 9 May 2004, they also stood in the Cup final, but it could not win at the third attempt. Again Neftchi Baku claimed the title with a 1-0 success after extra time. 2004/ 05 the club finished the season just two points clear of the relegation zone, the club moved due to financial problems but prior to 2005/06 season and made a game operation.

Meanwhile, the club was re-racked and plays since the 2010/11 season back in the second Azerbaijani league.

Stadium

The club plays its home matches at the Sähär Stadium. This multi-purpose stadium holds about 11,500 spectators.
