Shamsur Rahman

Shamsur Rahman ( Bengali: শামসুর রাহমান, Śāmasur Rahaman; born October 24, 1929 in Dhaka, † August 17, 2006 ) was a Bangladeshi poet, journalist and civil rights activist.

Life

Shamsur Rahman was born as the fourth of 13 children. He started with 18 years to write after he departed from Dhaka College. Rahman studied English literature at the University of Dhaka and earned his bachelor's degree there in 1953 and master's degree. He had a long career as a journalist and was editor of the daily newspaper Dainik Bangla and the weekly Bichitra. On the politically active intellectuals was committed a murder attempt in 1999 by supporters of the terrorist group " Harkat -ul- Jihad -al- Islami " ( HUJI ).

Rahman wrote more than 60 poems in Bengali and was one of the most important authors in the Bangladeshi literature of his time. Some of his works have been translated into English, such as "The Best Poems of Shamsur Rahman " ( 2005 in New Delhi ) and "The devotee, the Combatant: Selected Poems of Shamsur Rahman " (2000 in Dhaka ).

He died of a kidney and liver failure.

Works

Rahman's most famous work is probably the 1971 war of independence in Bangladesh, resulting poem: Swadhinata tumi ( স্বাধীনতা তুমি, literally: Independence, du).

Translations

Poems by Shamsur Rahman has published in German translation, the Bangladesh - POWER magazine. They have appeared in the anthology The strange bird - stories and poems from Bangladesh, which was published by the Draupadi -Verlag.
