The airport Shanghai Hongqiao (Chinese上海 虹桥 机场, Pinyin Shànghǎi Hongqiao Jichang ) is an airport located in the districts of Changning, Minhang and the government immediacy city of Shanghai in the People's Republic of China.

He is in two western districts of Shanghai, about 13 kilometers from the city center. Contrary to its name, start and end here since the opening of the airport Shanghai Pudong in 1999 mainly domestic flights.

The load factor, a year with over 20 million passengers and more than 500 takeoffs and landings a day more than the calculated capacity. In 2009, even 25 million passengers were transported.

The airport itself was overburdened with domestic flights, so it came to delays every day. This was due to the fact that the demand for domestic flights in China is increasing steadily and the airport with so far only a start and runway was not designed for such volumes. Meanwhile, an extension has eliminated the bottlenecks. Hongqiao Airport now has two start and runways ( each 3400 times 58 m), so that in 2011 over 33 million passengers were transported.

Extensions

Terminal 2 and a new start and runway was put into operation on 16 March 2010 after three years of construction. The west towards extension, built terminal is nearly a thousand feet long, the new parking spaces are also designed for the use of the widebody Airbus A380. The capacity of the airport will be increased to 40 million passengers by the year 2015. These, will be allocated to the new terminal and 10 million of the old Terminal 30 million. Should be possible 33 takeoffs and landings per hour. The two international airports in Shanghai together offer currently a passenger capacity of 100 million passengers a year.

Transport connections

Several buses offer a cheap way of the onward journey: The line " Airport Line No.1" connects the airport Shanghai Hongqiao with about 50 kilometers from Shanghai Pudong Airport. Buses leave every 20 to 30 minutes, the journey takes about 1 hour and costs 30 RMB. The Pudong district can be reached with the line " No route. 938 " for 7 RMB every 5-15 minutes.
