Shangri -La Hotels and Resorts is an Asian luxury hotel chain.

Name

The name was derived from the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton. Shangri -La is in it as a synonym for paradise.

History

Founded Shangri -La Hotels and Resorts in 1971 with a luxury hotel in Singapore from Malaysian billionaire Robert Kuok.

The planned for April 2011 opening of a luxury hotel on the Ringstrasse was canceled in February 2011 due to disagreements between the real estate company and the hotel chain. This fully furnished ready building was sold in December 2011 and is now a Ritz -Carlton Hotel.

In 1989, the subsidiary Traders was founded in hotels, which includes eleven hotels that specialize in business. With headquarters in Hong Kong Shangri -La is the largest Asian hotel chain. Due to good management, the chain continues to receive awards. For several years, the hotel chain is listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. About 80 % of the shares are still Robert Kuok.

Locations

Now the company has 71 hotels (as of February 23, 2011 ), preferably in Asia - with a strong focus on the PRC - and the Middle East, but also has offices in Sydney and Vancouver. The opening of several other hotels is planned, including two in Europe: In skyscraper The Shard in London in 2014 and in Rome in 2017.
