Sheldon Reservoir

The Sheldon Reservoir (also known as Sheldon Lake ) is a reservoir in Sheldon Lake State Park near Sheldon in northeast Harris County in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located north of U.S. Highway 90, about 26 km east of Houston and 9.7 km upstream from Channelview, and dams the Carpenters Bayou in the San Jacinto River Basin.

The lake is 4.82 km long and 1.6 km wide; The total area is 4.85 km ². The catchment area comprises approximately 48.55 km ². The 3 m high containment building is 14 m above sea level. The storage capacity of the lake is 6,604,061 m³.

The dam was completed in 1943 and was mainly water supplier to industry along the Houston Ship Channel. At that time, water from the San Jacinto River was pumped into the reservoir. After the Second World War, the system was obsolete and the water was diverted to Houston. In May 1952, the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department acquired the lake and the surrounding area to establish, among other things as a water bird sanctuary.

In 1957, the dam was rebuilt, inter alia, alligators, raccoons, minks, otters, opossums, muskrats, rabbits, white-tailed deer and beaver rats were exposed.

The area around the lake has been managed since 1984 by the Texas Environmental Protection Agency, the means are determined by the government.
