Shenandoah Valley

The Shenandoah Valley ( indian Shenandoah: Daughter of the Stars ) is an area in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern United States of America. It lies largely in the west of the State of Virginia and to a lesser extent in the extreme northeast of West Virginia.

It extends in the valley - and - ridge zone ( Valley and Ridge ) of the Appalachian Mountains between the Appalachian Mountains and the Allegheny Plateau (s ) in the west and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and part of the Great Valley ( Great Valley) of the Appalachians.

Through the valley flows the eponymous Shenandoah.

Because of its strategic location, the valley in the Civil War scene of several important campaigns was (see, among others, Jackson's Shenandoah campaign of 1862, Lynchburg campaign and Sheridan's Shenandoah campaign of 1864). In particular, moving the control to the northern part around Winchester very frequently between North and South.

Parts of the area are protected as Shenandoah National Park since 1935.
