Shenork I Kaloustian of Constantinople

Archbishop Schnork I. Kalustjan (birth name Arşak, Armenian Շնորհք Գալուստյան, French Chenork Kaloustian; born September 27, 1913 in İğdeli at Çandır, Yozgat; † 7 March 1990 in Echmiadzin, Armenian SSR, Soviet Union), civil Şınorhk Kalustyan, was the 82. Armenian Apostolic Patriarch of Constantinople Opel under the authority of the Catholicos of Armenia and of All Armenians.

Life

Originally from the Turkish province of Yozgat Kalustjan was elected in 1963 to the Patriarch of Constantinople Opel and served for 27 years as Armenian Apostolic Patriarch in Istanbul. He conducted research on the fate of crypto Armenians and introduced in 1980 during a meeting with the Armenian community of Jerusalem, with a list in which he shared the Armenians in Turkey in four groups. He died on 7 March 1990 in Etchmiadzin in the then Soviet Armenia.
